Templates

Templates are an easy solution to page design and constant updating. You can create a page using all the background graphics and layouts you wish. Then define which areas are editable and which are static. Once saved the template can be called up ad used everytime you start a new page. You no longer have to recreate the look to match your theme every time you create a new page . If you decide on a design change you can update the template and all of your changes carry through to the subsequent pages.

Getting Started

From the File/New menu select a new Basic Page/HTML Template. Design your page using layout tables, images, fonts and colors. You may want to include dummy text to make it easier to see how the page will look.

Decide the areas that you want to be able to edit on the individual page and the objects that will stay the same from page to page. Highlight an area that will be editable and choose Insert/Templlate Object/Editable Region. A dialoge box wll open and ask you to name the area. Repeat for each section you want to make editable. Save the template when finsihed.

When you are ready to use the template, choose File/New and select the templates tab. Your template should be listed. Double click and it will appear inthe document window. Only the areas you selected as editable will be available for you to change. Save the new page as you would regularly.

If you need to change the static elements on the page, open the template directly and make the changes. Save the template and Dreamweaver will automatically update each of the files created from the template. Once it finishes it will the numbr of files checked an the numer updated.
